  • Vehicle warranty periods have varied greatly in the last few years as automakers attempt to find the magic key to attracting new car buyers. Keeping track of all of this can be confusing and a daunting task, especially if a family owns several cars.

How to Find Out the Warranty Period

Locate the vehicle identification number (VIN) of the vehicle is question. You should find it on the data tag, usually found near the latch on the driver's door or the door pillar. If the data tag is missing or damaged so as to be unreadable, look through the windshield at the driver's side of the dashboard. A stamped metal tag with numbers on it should be visible; this is the VIN number also. Call the service department at the local dealer for your brand of car and ask them to check the warranty on your car. After asking for your VIN number, the service adviser will do a computer check on your car and be able to tell you if there is any warranty left on the car. The dealer will not be able to tell you if the car is under an extended warranty plan if it was not purchased with the car. That information might be available for a fee from one of the companies that offer car history reports.
