  • Some say being selfish is being human, but what really causes people to be selfish? Is it something brought on by peers or relatives? Is it something you can control?

What Does It Mean to Be Selfish?

When someone is selfish, it usually means he is trying as hard as he can to make what he wants the top priority. When being selfish, you put your needs ahead of everything: family, education, friends.

    Work-aholics

People who refuse to stop what they are doing and give a moment of their time are known to be work-aholics. They're the truly selfish people who put their work and accomplishments in front of everything, and everyone, else.

    Self-Satisfaction

Self-satisfaction is probably one of the largest forms of selfishness today. It's also one of the most unnoticed forms of selfishness. People are constantly trying to prove themselves to someone. Whether it be friends or family, people are always trying to find pride in the work they do. Because of this, they form self-satisfaction.

    Fear of Losing Control

The fear of losing control is the first sign of selfishness. Part of being human is the need to be in control of everything--your life, your job. If this sense of control is threatened or taken away, some people will do anything to get it back. This can cause a major case of selfishness.

How Can You Get Over Selfishness?

Getting over selfishness means understanding that selfishness is a weakness. It means you have to learn how to be confident in yourself and the things you do. To get over selfishness, it's important that you build more self confidence than you had before.
