According to the Fire and Rescue Department of Fairfax County, Virginia, electric blankets are safe. The trouble starts if they are misused. For example, you must turn off the blanket when not in use. You cannot sit on or pile pillows or stuffed animals on the electric blanket because excessive heat can build up. In addition, you cannot wash an electric blanket. When people follow the basic rules, electric blankets are safe to use.
On the Other: They May be Unsafe
The verdict is still out on whether electric and magnetic fields are harmful to people. EMFs may be responsible for causing cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute. In addition, just like any electric appliance, electric blankets can malfunction.

If used properly, electric blankets are a good choice for people who want an economic way to stay warm during the winter. To be safe, select a blanket that has been approved by a national testing agency.
