Fences in residential areas, such as neighborhoods and subdivisions, must be built to code. Always check with city officials before building a fence to be sure you are compliant with local building codes. Most cities require privacy fences to have the posts placed on the side of the fence facing the homeowner who is building the fence. The most attractive side of the fence should face your neighbor.

    On the Other: Livestock Fences

If you are building a fence to contain livestock, the post should be on the side of the fence that will receive the least pressure. This is so that if an animal leans on the fence it will push the fencing material against the post, instead of away from it. If both sides of the fence will be used to contain animals, it doesn't matter which side the post goes on.

    Bottom Line

The placement of fence posts depends upon the application. In residential areas, posts should be placed according to local building codes, usually on the side facing the homeowner installing the fence. For agricultural use, practicality should dictate on which side the posts are placed.
