Strawberries are generally prolific, with hundreds of varieties from which to choose. Pick one that will do best in your climate, choose the right spot and care for them, and they will reward you with several pounds of delicious fruit each season.
Characteristics
Early season varieties do better in warm climates with long growing seasons, although they will produce in northern, cold climates---but not as well. All varieties of strawberries do best in full sun.
Resistance
Some strawberry varieties, such as Earliglow, are resistant to root rot and wilt, but gardeners should research local crop diseases.
Placement
Strawberries thrive in large, open areas without competition for nutrients from nearby trees or bushes.
Soil
Strawberries need plenty of breathing room, with loose and aerated soil that drains well. They need adequate moisture, but don't do well when water sits at the roots.
Climate
Planting should take place after danger of frost passes. If an unexpected frost moves in after planting, thick mulch over the strawberry plants will protect them. Straw works well, and keeps weeds at bay during the growing season.
