Vaginal skin tags are not a serious condition. Usually appearing as women get older, these benign skin growths are more of an embarrassment or irritation than a medical concern. In addition to the genitals, skin tags can grow on the face, neck, under the arms and the breasts.
Features
Skin tags vary in size and shape, and can be different shades. Typically they are flesh-colored, but they can also appear darker. Some protrude while others are flat.
Pregnancy
Even though there is not a definite connection, vaginal skin tags frequently appear on pregnant women. Weight gain during pregnancy may cause the skin tags to rub against clothing; this can contribute to vaginal skin tag growth.
Swelling
Skin tags can swell and become painfully irritating during a woman's menstrual cycle. They return to their normal size when the cycle is complete. The typical size of vaginal skin tags is that of the size of rice grains.
Prevention
Tight clothing and anything that causes friction in the vaginal area can promote the growth of skin tags. To help prevent their occurrence, wear loose clothing and lightweight, cotton under garments. Clean the vaginal area soon after intercourse to prevent infection.
Solution
Vaginal skin tags cannot always be prevented; however, you can have them removed using various methods. They can be cut off, cauterized--heated to kill cell growth, frozen via a cryosurgical procedure, or removed with laser surgery. Discuss these options with your doctor to determine which procedure is right for you.
