<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Creams Diminish Scars
Specially formulated creams can diminish the appearance of scars. These creams are rubbed into the scar several times a day. According to the makers of Mederma, a popular scar cream, 77 percent of those who applied the scar-removal cream have seen moderate to significant improvement in terms of texture, softness and redness of their scars.
On the Other: No Significant Results
Scar creams can be purchased over the counter at most beauty supply stores. A scar cream, "may reduce the appearance of some scars...but it isn't likely to produce significant results," according to the Mayo Clinic. Prescription steroid creams and procedures done in a doctor's office, such as collagen or steroid shots, are more effective.
Bottom Line
Mederma says its scar creams are 77 percent effective in improving the texture, softness and redness of a scar. This does not mean the scar goes away completely. The Mayo Clinic suggests the same thing: Creams can reduce the appearance of a scar but will not make it go away completely. If you are interested in diminishing the appearance of a scar, you may be satisfied. But if you want the scar completely removed, you will not be satisfied with a cream.
