A suspended ceiling is an option with space to install the suspended ceiling grid and tiles below the existing ceiling. Allow a minimum of six inches working space above the suspended ceiling grid system. Above a shower, a suspended ceiling must use water-resistant ceiling tiles to repel moisture and mold, and must include an exhaust fan.

On the Other: No Head Room

If the finished ceiling height in the bathroom does not leave adequate space for installation of suspended ceiling, it won't work. Building code, per International Residential Code, 2007, Section R305.1, states "bathrooms shall have a ceiling height of not less than 7 feet (2134 mm); and a minimum ceiling height of 6-feet, 8-inches (2036 mm) over a shower, above a minimum area of 30-inches by 30-inches at the showerhead." Without adequate ventilation, a suspended ceiling above a shower is not advisable.

    Bottom Line

With an exhaust system, a water resistant suspended ceiling is acceptable above a shower if the finished ceiling is high enough to allow suspended ceiling installation according to building code.
