Veterinary treatment is becoming more sophisticated, which means veterinary expenses are increasing. For many owners, pet insurance offers a cost savings on routine care and peace of mind that any major health issues will be affordable. Although a few pets with existing health conditions do not qualify for coverage, most pets are able to be insured.

On the Other: Pre-Existing Conditions Are Not Covered

Since heartworms infection is treatable, most insurance companies would not deny coverage to a previously affected dog. Your dog's heartworms treatment may not be covered, however. Some companies or plans don't cover heartworms treatment at all. If your dog is still undergoing treatment, or finished treatment within the past six to 12 months, the infection would be considered a pre-existing condition. As a rule, pet insurance companies do not cover pre-existing conditions, but the rest of your dog's coverage is not affected.

    Bottom Line

You can get pet insurance on a dog that has had a heartworms. If it is currently undergoing treatment, or recently finished it, any follow-up treatment for six to 12 months would not be covered.
