Wireless routers are one of the easiest and most convenient ways to set up a computer network just about anywhere. Most modern computers are designed to work with a wireless router and network.

A wireless network router connects computers to an Internet connection by communicating via radio signals, instead of using a physical wire, according to Microsoft.
Types
Although the first wireless routers used an 802.11b standard, most new routers use at least the 802.11g standard. As of 2009, the 802.11n1 provided the best and fastest wireless service.
Features
In addition to interacting with any computer that has a wireless receiver, wireless routers act as a natural firewall because all Internet information goes to the router, so a person cannot easily attack a specific user behind a router.
Function
In order for the wireless router to transmit data across the Internet, it needs a physical connection to modem and all computers that connect to it need a wireless adapter card.
Tips
Microsoft recommends that people thinking of purchasing a wireless router consider purchasing a router and any adapters from the same brand to ensure compatibility. Some companies offer savings for buying a router/adapter bundle.
