Low HDL levels can put you at risk for coronary heart disease. HDL (high-density lipoproteins), is the good cholesterol that keeps LDL (low-density lipoproteins), the bad cholesterol, from building up in arteries. Treating low HDL can easily be done without prescription medications.
Niacin
Niacin (nicotinic acid) is used in the treatment of low HDL levels. This is a B vitamin that should be taken under the guidance of a doctor due to possible side effects.
Fish Oil
Taking fish oil is another way to treat low HDL. This can be found in omega-3 supplements or in leafy vegetables, soy foods---and, of course, fish.
Diet
Treating low HDL can easily be done by adding more soluble fiber to your diet. Soluble fiber is found in fruits and vegetables. Lowering the amount of trans fats in your diet will also help increase HDL.
Alcohol
Low HDL can be treated by consuming daily moderate amounts of alcohol. Moderate amounts are defined as no more than a couple of glasses of wine, 2 bottles of beer or a couple of shots of spirits.
Exercise
One of the easiest ways to treat low HDL is through aerobic exercise. According to the Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine, a 10- to 20-percent raise in HDL levels is possible through regular aerobic exercise.
