  • I think many religions are at odds with consumerism... It's a question of degree. There's nothing wrong with having and owning things, it's a question of the degree to which one is "addicted" to having more and more "stuff": this is a behavior which comes from a sense of being incomplete and needy... an attempt to fill one's sense of emptiness through a program of acquisition. Authentic spiritual development moves in the opposite direction somewhat: resolving the false views which lead to the sense of emptiness. As that development progresses, there is a natural reduction in craving and clinging to "more stuff".
