What are the benifits of year round school (3 months on, 1 month off cycle) compaired to the tradtional school schedule?

My daughters were on that schedule when we lived in Nevada, and there were benefits and drawbacks. They do not have to spend the first month back after summer vacation refreshing their memory, and you can take vacations during non-peak traveling times. The main drawback was finding daycare for the off month if both parents work. In Nevada, the YMCA near the school developed a program for the kids who were off where the kids got to do crafts, physical activities, and field trips to area attractions.
