Lap-Band® surgery is a weight-loss surgery that helps you control the amount of food you eat. The National Institutes of Health set the qualification requirements for Lap-Band® surgery in the early 1990s, and these requirements have not been changed.
Age Requirements
Individuals considering Lap-Band® surgery must be at least 18 years old.
Weight Status
The Lap-Band® surgery is for individuals who are at least 100 pounds overweight or have a body mass index (BMI) of at least 40.
Other Health Conditions
If an individual considering Lap-Band® surgery has a weight-related medical condition---such as high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes or similar medical conditions---may be considered for Lap-Band® surgery with a BMI of at least 35.
Cost
Lap-Band® surgery may cost $12,000 to $25,000; this usually includes the first year of follow-up visits. The surgery's cost varies based on geographical location, insurance coverage, and whether an overnight hospital stay is required. After the first year, follow-up visits may cost $35 to $200 each. Some insurance companies will cover some or all of the surgery's cost after you have shown a history of other attempts to lose weight.
Final Decision
You and a qualified surgeon should make the final decision about an individual's qualification for Lap-Band® surgery together. The decision should be based on the requirements set by the NIH and whether the procedure is affordable for the individual.
