A treadmill can actually be used for a total body workout when utilized properly. Not only is it great cardiovascular exercise, but it helps to tone and tighten muscles all over your body, especially your lower half.
Thighs
When you walk or run, the major muscles working are the front and backside of your thighs. That is where you most often "feel the burn."
Glutes
In addition to your thighs working hard, your hips and buttocks are also working hard. Get even more of a burn by walking or running on an incline.
Calves and Ankles
Your calves and ankles also reap a benefit. Especially with runners, you will see very defined calf muscles and your ankles develop strength because they are required to support your weight.
Arms
You can work your arms by power walking and pumping them as you go. You can get an additional burn by using weights while you walk.
Abs and Back
Your core muscles are used all the time to stabilize and support your body. So when walking or running on a treadmill, these muscles are constantly in use. You can increase the burn by consciously tightening your abs while you walk or run.
Heart
Walking and especially running on a treadmill is one of the top ways to build your heart muscle and keep it healthy and in good working order. In addition, getting your heart pumping helps to melt excess fat.
