Flower therapy, also called flower essence therapy, is the use of highly diluted plant substances to treat emotional and psychological conditions. Flower essences are similar to homeopathic remedies, in that they contain only the energy of the plant and nondetectable physical components.
Energy Medicine
Flower therapy is a form of vibrational (energy) medicine, meaning that its intent is to affect energy, not body chemistry. According to Bach Flowers U.S., "By shifting the resonance within our energetic anatomy, flower essence therapy restores balance to our entire system."
Bach Flower Therapy
Bach flower essences are probably the best known, but they are not the only form of flower therapy. Developed by Dr. Edward Bach in the 1930s, the 38 Bach remedies are flower essences designed to address 38 different psychological types.
Production
Making a flower essence involves sun-infusing the blossoms of a plant, bush or tree in water. The liquid is then diluted according to the homeopathic principle of dilutions, which states that the lower the dose of the medication, the greater its effectiveness. The essence is preserved with either alcohol or a nonalcoholic substance.
Safety and Efficacy
Flower therapy is safe for adults, children, babies and animals. Its effectiveness is the subject of much debate.
Expert Insight
According to the Flower Essence Society, the best way to choose flower essences is to first understand the specific mental or emotional challenges you face rather than to focus on physical symptoms.
