  • Traditionally, a black belt is referred to as proficiency in martial arts, but today this term is as common in the workplace as in karate studios. It refers to six sigma experts, who espouse a management methodology that improves process and quality.

    Six Sigma Definition

Six sigma stands for "six deviations," a statistical term meaning six deviations from the mean, and a measure that includes almost all points in a bell curve. It is an approach that examines business processes using specific methods. It is designed to achieve near-perfect results (e.g. a production process that has less than a 1 percent flaw rate, meaning almost all useable production is within six standard deviations of the mean.)

    Steps

The six sigma approach involves five distinct steps, commonly referred to as DMAIC. They are: 1) Define opportunities, 2) Measure performance, 3) Analyze opportunity, 4) Improve performance and 5) Control performance.

    How it Works

The analysis begins with the examination of the current process and identification of defects or breakdowns from the beginning to the end. A new process is designed to eliminate or streamline steps. It is then implemented and periodically re-evaluated. A front-line staff is often involved in the analysis.

    Benefits

Six sigma approaches improve quality by eliminating defects and ensures delivery of a consistent product or service. Used initially in manufacturing, it is now widely applied to a variety of customer service functions.

    Certification

Certified six sigma practitioners both lead projects and teach methodology and are granted "belts," according to their level of expertise. The highest level, like in karate, is a black belt. Certification can be obtained via business organizations and educational institutions.
