Refilling your printer's ink cartridge at home is a cost-effective way of keeping your printer running full-speed, and you don't have to throw away an empty cartridge every time you do it. According to a New York Times article on the subject, you can save an average of 65 percent by refilling ink cartridges yourself.
On the Other: It Can Be Messy and Time-Consuming
The process of refilling an ink cartridge requires focus, patience and a little time. Refilling kits come with ink and a syringe. If you aren't careful or have unsteady hands, you run the risk of spilling ink (which is very hard to clean) or smudging everything you touch in the next day or so.
Bottom Line
If you want to save money and reduce waste--and if you trust yourself with transferring ink--refilling the cartridges on your own is a great idea. While a little more time-consuming and involved than simply removing an expired cartridge and inserting a new one, you'll learn a new skill and your wallet will thank you.
