Depression in men is not easily recognized and many times goes undiagnosed. Men will not seek help, they are too competitive and think they are strong enough to handle any situation. Depression is treatable and the sooner men know some of the signs and symptoms, the sooner they can get treatment.
Signs
Men with depression can become angry at the drop of a hat. They may not be able to take criticism well and may easily become aggressive and violent toward family members and friends.
Physical
Complaining of headaches or having stomach ulcers are symptoms of depression. Men with depression may develop high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.
Alcohol and Drugs
A sign of depression is having to rely on drugs to get through the day and to feel better. Some men feel that the only way to cope with depression is with the use of alcohol to mask their feelings.
Weight Change
Eating may or may not be of interest to the man who is depressed. Some men may need to eat more comfort food resulting in weight gain, while others may have no interest in food and lose weight.
Risks
The biggest risk of not having treatment for depression is suicide. Instead of seeking help, which would be admitting weakness, some men commit suicide.
