An SR 22 is a form that not all drivers will ever have to see. While an SR 22 allows you to stay on the road, you can avoid this by obeying traffic laws and not drinking and driving.
Identification
An SR-22 is not an insurance policy, but a form, called a Certificate of Financial Responsibility (CFR) that the courts require as proof that you have car insurance, according to Geico.
Considerations
Not every state in the U.S. uses or requires an SR 22. In addition, some states only demand this form for certain traffic accidents, such as a Driving Under the Influence violation, according to Geico.
Features
An SR 22 just needs filing with the state. It usually states pertinent information, such as your name and address, as well as ensuring that you have the minimum coverage required by the state, according to Progressive Insurance.
Time Frame
So long as you have an SR 22 you are considered a legal driver, but without an official license. This typically does not last more than 36 months, but this too depends on the state, according to Progressive.
Warning
Since an SR 22 indicates a serious driving offense, insurance companies may use this as a reason to void your policy. If this happens your SR 22 expires along with driving privileges.
