  • Sometimes you'll be working with Internet Explorer, and you go to click an icon or command in a toolbar and discover that the toolbar is just ... gone. Knowing how it went into hiding will help you get it back.

    Configurable

The toolbars in Internet Explorer are "user configurable." That means you can arrange them any way you want--and remove them, if you so desire.

    Unchecked Toolbars

Your toolbar may be hiding because you turned it off by accident. You can turn toolbars on and off by using the "Toolbars" option under the "View" menu; a check mark means a toolbar is visible, and an unchecked toolbar is hidden.

    Dragged Away

If your toolbars aren't locked, they can be dragged to different places in the header of the Explorer window. You may have done this unintentionally. Each unlocked toolbar has a short vertical line at the left edge; click and drag it to move the toolbar.

    Locking Down

Prevent your toolbars from going anywhere by selecting "Lock the Toolbars" from the "Toolbars" option in the "View" menu.

    Time to Reset

If all else fails, you can restore Explorer to its original state. Go to the "Tools" menu, select "Internet Options," click the "Advanced" tab and click the "Reset ..." button under "Reset Internet Explorer settings." Read the warnings and, if you're ready, click "Reset."
