The American Academy of Dermatology's AcneNet site recommends over-the-counter scar treatments such as Mederma for mild acne scarring, or acne scarring that has not resulted in deep indentations in the skin. Mederma's website offers information recommending the product for acne scarring, as well as a number of glowing reviews from satisfied customers.

On the Other: Reviews are Mixed

Mederma has been extensively reviewed. On Acne.org, Mederma got an average of 3.3 out of 5 smiley faces. Reviews were much more mixed at Smartskincare.com. Several reviewers at Drugstore.com felt that it not only faded acne scars, but also helped to dry up and prevent acne pimples. Many complained that Mederma was itchy or dried the skin out.

    Bottom Line

Use of Mederma for acne scarring seems to be a toss-up. While it is recommended for mild acne scarring, the reviews are mixed, with some users experiencing excellent results, and others not seeing any results at all, or experiencing skin complications after use.
