  • Many men are disconcerted to find that their facial hair has become patchy, or that hair on some portions of their face does not grow or will not grow back after shaving. Facial hair loss can be caused by many issues, but is generally not serious.

    Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata is a generic medical term used for hair loss on the body and scalp. Causes can be an autoimmune disorder, genetics, or radiation therapy used for cancer.

    Illness

Some illnesses such as thyroid disorders, vitiligo (loss of pigment), lupus and ulcerative colitis can cause patchy facial hair. If facial hair loss comes on suddenly, medical treatment is recommended.

    Concealment

Many men choose to shave their mustaches to conceal missing hair if bald spots are prominent.

    Scarring

Facial scars may prevent hair follicles from properly growing hair. Scars on the cheeks, lip or chin may get in the way of beard or mustache growth.

    Treatment

Hair lost due to alopecia areata may not return without the use of regrowth treatments like minoxidil. Cortisone injections into the skin near the bare patches are used in extreme cases to stimulate growth, though they can be costly and painful. Many patients tend to forgo treatment for mustache and beard baldness, opting to shave the area around the baldness instead.
