  • Plastic surgery is one of the most competitive and lucrative specialties in the medical field. Education lasts 13 to 14 years, and competition is fierce.

    Bachelor's Degree

Receiving a bachelor's degree is the first step toward becoming a plastic surgeon. Common pre-med majors are biology, chemistry and physics.

    Medical School

You will need to pass the MCAT to get into medical school. Once you have been accepted, you will complete two years of classroom and laboratory work, then two years of working directly with patients under supervision.

    Residency

During your residency, you can begin to focus more on plastic surgery. You will work as a resident for six to eight years. You can either spend three years as a general surgery resident and then three more years as plastic surgery resident, or you can find a plastic surgery residency that lasts the full six to eight years.

    Examinations

Upon completion of your residency, you will need to complete various examinations to become licensed. Some examinations will be oral and some will be written. Different states might have different requirements.

    Official Board Certification

Only surgeons certified through the American Society of Plastic Surgeons can legitimately be called plastic surgeons. Contact this organization to find applicable residency programs, to take your examinations, or to get officially licensed.
