    Dodge Brothers

    John Francis Dodge was born in 1864, four years earlier than his younger brother Horace Elgin Dodge. Both were born in Niles, Mich.

    Origin

    The Dodge brothers got their start with a bicycle and machine factory in Windsor, Canada. They moved the operation to Detroit in 1901 and began producing automobile parts.

    History

    In 1902, the Dodge brothers helped fund Ford Motor Co. They started their own venture, the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Co., in 1914. Dodge produced 249 cars that first year.

    Time Frame

    By 1920, the Dodge brothers were auto industry giants. However, both brothers passed away that year. John Dodge died of pneumonia and Horace Dodge of cirrhosis.

    Purchase

    In 1925, Dillon, Read & Co. bought the Dodge auto company from the brothers' widows for $146 million, making it the largest cash transaction in history at the time.
