Veterinary technicians are the nurses of the pet world. Their duties include administering patient treatments, assisting in surgery, and performing a number of diagnostic tests including x-rays and bloodwork.
Vital Statistics
A veterinary technician will usually be required to obtain a patient history and collect vial information upon initial examination such as weight, temperature, and pulse and respiration rates.
Diagnostic Procedures
Technicians routinely obtain samples for diagnostic procedures such as urine, blood, fecal matter, or any other sample necessary for diagnosis. The technician is usually tasked with completing the test and reporting the results to the veterinarian.
Surgery
Technicians can also assist during surgery, however, are barred from performing surgical procedures themselves. This can include the administration and monitoring of anesthesia, prepping the patient, and suturing.
Administration of Treatment
Medications and other ongoing therapies will be administered by technicians including: subcutaneous, intramuscular or intravenous injections, IV fluid therapy, and oral and topical medications.
Maintenance
Technicians may also be in charge of maintaining the clinic and will clean and sterilize surgical equipment, stock the pharmacy and maintain the cleanliness of the treatment and surgical areas.
