Basic Requirements

Civil service requirements state that an individual must be a U.S. citizen, at least 20 years old, have a high school diploma, and pass both a physical fitness and written examination.

Further Education

Many cities and states require their officers to have a four-year degree from a college or university, preferably in the field of criminal justice. All federal officers must have a college degree. Nearly every police department requires its officers to be graduates of a police training academy.

Job Skills

In addition to training received at a law enforcement academy, skills in foreign languages, written and verbal communications and computers are also helpful.

Further Training

Police officers undergo continuing education throughout their careers. Besides on-the-job training classes, officers seeking promotion may be expected to pursue advanced degrees or complete key training classes.

The outlook for the position of police officer is very favorable, with consistent growth expected in most areas of the country. Although a dangerous career, police officers are honored and respected by society. Starting pay averages about $24,000 per year, and salaries top $72,000 for experienced officers. Detectives, investigators, chiefs and other upper level positions average $52,000 to more than $75,000.
