Aspirin has been shown to help alleviate pain in dogs, namely with arthritis, fever or general soreness. Aspirin can be given with food, once every 12 hours. The standard dosage is between five and 15 milligrams per pound of weight; a 120-pound dog should be given between 600 and 1,800 milligrams per dose.
Aspirin can cause side effects in dogs of all sizes, including death. The most common side effects are pain, bleeding and ulceration. Pet owners should pay close attention to their pet's actions---namely bathroom and eating habits---while taking aspirin, and discontinue use immediately if the pet is acting abnormally.
While aspirin has been known to relieve pain in dogs of all sizes, aspirin should only be administered under direction of a veterinarian. Pet owners should consult a veterinarian at the first sign that a dog is acting abnormally---prior to administering aspirin---and both the owner and vet can determine the best course of treatment.
