It is a requirement of U.S. law that those who drive should do so with insurance. However, the rates of auto insurance can be affected by a number of actions, including speeding tickets, which don't have anything to do with crashes or damage.
Why
Put bluntly, the reason that auto insurance goes up is that traffic violations can be seen as contributing to unsafe driving habits. People who drive faster are more likely to get into a wreck, and thus cost more to insure.
When
Typically your auto insurance rates will not go up until after the ticket has been processed through the court or the fine is paid as an admittance of guilt.
Where
Not all states will allow auto insurance companies to raise a client's rates after a single speeding ticket or parking violation. Check with your insurance company to find out if that's the case where you live.
How Much
There are a number of factors that go into determining how much your auto insurance policy cost rises. The severity of the offense, how many previous offenses you have and mitigating circumstances.
Not Guilty
If you beat the charge of speeding, then make sure the information is forwarded to your insurance company so that your rates don't go up.
