  • Payment by check is an option you can use when making online purchases. To do so, you will enter information into a form, and the funds will immediately transfer to the merchant's account. This payment option is similar to using a credit card online, in that you enter an account number instead of a paper copy of your check. Unlike writing checks in person, you are also not required to sign the check. You just simply submit the necessary information to complete the transaction.

    Shopping Online

Select your purchases on the store web site of your choice, and proceed to the checkout. Select your billing and shipping address for this purchase. Select "Continue." Select payment by check when prompted. You will see "https://" preceding the url or web address. If you do not, this page is not encrypted with a SSL secure link and entering your information will put you at risk of third parties viewing your checking information. The payment by check form will load on the screen.

    Enter Your Checking Information

Enter the routing or transit number into the provided text box. This is the number given by the first nine digits listed at the bottom of your check. Enter your bank account number in the provided text box. This is the number given by the next eight digits listed at the bottom of your check. Be careful not to confuse these two numbers, or to include the check number with these two sets of numbers. The check number is the four-digit number listed away from any other numbers. Enter the check number, if asked. Enter the purchase amount in the text box provided. Click "Continue."

    Finalize the Transaction

You will be prompted to check your transaction before it is complete, to check for any errors. Take time to do this before finalizing the transaction. Once you are sure everything is correct, select "Complete Transaction." Once you select "Complete Transaction," the money will be deducted from your checking account and deposited directly into the merchant's account. "Your receipt" will display on the screen. Print out a copy for your records. Unless you select the option to store your information in the store's website, it will be immediately erased from the web site's database.
