The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states that a common ingredient in cellulite creams is aminophylline. Aminophylline is an FDA-approved prescription drug that also treats asthma and generally is safe unless you are allergic to it or its ingredient ethylenediamine.
On the Other: Safety in Pregnancy Is Unknown
Aminophylline is a category C drug for pregnancy. This means that there are no conclusive studies in pregnant women. Studies of category C drugs in pregnant animals sometimes find undesirable results for the baby. Aminophylline can pass through breast milk. You also can develop an allergy to aminophylline after a period of usage.
Bottom Line
Pregnant women should avoid cellulite cream usage because aminophylline has unknown effects on humans during pregnancy. Pregnant women should take only the category C drugs that they need. Because cellulite creams are cosmetic items and not necessities, pregnant women should not use them.
