Traditional etiquette dictates that a Christmas tip for a hairdresser is equal to the cost of one salon visit, according to the Emily Post Institute. If more than one person provides your services, such as a shampooist who regularly washes your hair, split the tip equally among all of the hairdressers.
On the Other: Consider Your Budget and Relationship
On a tight budget, consider other factors when determining your tip, such as the overall quality of your hairdresser's work and how many years you have used his services. You may wish to decrease the amount of your tip for a new stylist, or if you are not always satisfied with her service. If you consistently tip more than the customary 15 percent of the total bill throughout the year, a reduced tip along with a homemade gift is appropriate.
Bottom Line
Etiquette serves as a guideline, not a hard and fast rule. Calculating your tip based upon your individual circumstances and budget are acceptable and understandable, especially during tough financial times. No matter how much you tip, include a hand-written note expressing your gratitude for your hairdresser's service.
