Bladder infections, also known as cystitis and bladder inflammation, are more common in women than in men, according to WebMD.com. Approximately 20 percent of all women get this infection at some point in their lives.
Cause
Bladder infections are mostly caused by the E. coli bacterial strain, according to WebMD.com. This in normally found in the intestines.
Infection
In women, bladder infections can be acquired after regular sexual intercourse. This occurs when the bacteria reaches the bladder through the woman's urethra.
Effect in Women
Though bladder infections are a source of discomfort and can become serious, they can quickly clear up in women and are fairly harmless if treatment is followed.
Effect in Men
Bladder infections are usually signs of a more serious disorder in men, such as an interference or blockage in the urinary tract, and should be examined and treated accordingly.
Treatment
Treatment for bladder infections includes antibiotics that are prescribed by your doctor. However, washing your genital area after sex, wiping from front to back after bowel movements and drinking cranberry juice are ways to prevent re-infection.
