  • Writing a thank you card when you receive money for any occasion can be the most difficult kind of thank you card to write, even though money is usually tremendously appreciated. Write the card like you would for any other gift, using your plans for the money to guide you.

    General Guidelines

Write all of your thank you cards by hand, no matter how tedious the task may seem. Each person put time and thought into your gift, even if it's money, therefore you should return the time, thought and energy by writing the card. Handwritten notes usually appear more genuine and sincere. Take your time and write neatly. Send your thank you cards within two weeks of receiving the money. Never use the monetary amount in your thank you note. Work around that with statements such as "generous gift" or "monetary present."

    Graduations

Many people give graduates a card with a check or cash inside rather than items. Let the gift-giver know what you plan to do with your graduation cash. For example: "Dear Aunt Sarah, Thank you so very much for your generous gift. I'm so honored you attended my graduation. This gift has helped me finalize plans for a summer trip to Europe before I start classes next fall. I'll think of you each day I'm there. Thank you again. With Love, Jenni" or "Dear Mr. Johnson, Thank you so much for your thoughtful gift. I have added your monetary gift to my tuition and book fund. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. Sincerely, James Peters"

    Weddings

Weddings are another occasion when some people will give the couple money. Let the giver know what you plan to do with the money, and mention the wedding. If they were unable to attend, include a snapshot. If you use the money for your honeymoon, and send the thank you card afterward, include a postcard or picture. You could write: "Dear Uncle Bob and Aunt Sue, Thank you so much for your generous gift. We were delighted to see you at the wedding, it means so much that you made it. Your gift allowed us to splurge on our honeymoon a bit more than we expected. We were able to dine at the five-star restaurant on Maui, which made our last night there even more memorable. We can't say thank you enough. Love, Always, Kimmi and Dave" or "Dear Mr. and Mrs. Andrews, Thank you for the thoughtful monetary gift. We have started a savings account for a down payment on our first home together, and your check will be one of our first deposits. We sincerely appreciate your kindness. Thank you, Amber and Gary Ingles"

    Birthdays and Other Occasions

Inject your personality into your thank you cards, as long as you keep the tone thankful, sincere and appropriate. For example: "Uncle Mark, Thank you so much for the gift of money. How did you know that's exactly what I wanted? Seriously, I will be using it to purchase the new game system I've been saving for. You're the best! Thanks, Tommy" If someone you don't know very well gives you a monetary gift, write a formal and respectful note of thanks. "Dear Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Thank you for your thoughtful and generous gift. It will go towards my savings for a new car. I'll think of you when I start the engine. Thank you so much. Respectfully, Justin Lemms"
