Acupuncture, especially when combined with herbal medicine and traditional medical interventions, is an effective fertility treatment, according to acupuncture expert Dr. Mike Berkley of The Berkley Center for Reproductive Wellness. Women use acupuncture to treat any type of fertility disorder such as spasmed tubes, repeated pregnancy loss, unexplained infertility and polycystic ovarian syndrome. Men with poor sperm quality can also benefit from acupuncture.

On the Other: There Are Risks

Women who want to prevent miscarriage will sometimes get acupuncture within the first trimester to help prevent a miscarriage. However, a miscarriage could occur if incorrect acupuncture points are used. When the patient is pregnant, the acupuncturist should not place needles in certain areas of the gallbladder, stomach, large intestine, spleen, bladder or anywhere on the lower abdomen.

    Bottom Line

Acupuncture is used to treat various infertility conditions. It will not help with blocked tubes, however. Acupuncture is similar to physical therapy in that patients benefit the more they do it. Acupuncture seems to have a therapeutic effect, according to Dr. Berkley.
