It is easy to assume you are safer in an SUV, as opposed to a car. However, according to Joe Nolan, senior vice president at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, many cars perform better than SUVs. In addition, SUVs are more susceptible to rollover, perform worse than cars do in side and rear collisions and have limited backup visibility.

On the Other: You can Better Equip Your SUV

Certain safety features make SUVs as safe as cars, including stability control, side curtain airbags in all rows, independent suspensions, runflat tires, backup sensors, shoulder belts and head restraints in all seats.

    Bottom Line

People feel safer in SUVs because they are bigger and the driver is sitting up higher, allowing for a better view. However, on safety tests, SUVs do not perform better than cars do, and they are more dangerous when it comes to rollovers and backing up. If you equip them properly, however, they can often be as safe as cars.
