<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Swiffer Refills are Safe around Kids
Ninety percent or more of the cleaning fluid that the Swiffer uses is made of water. Between 1 and 4 percent is made with propylene glycol n-propyl ether. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recognizes propylene glycol as safe for use in food. No ingredients in Swiffer refills are harmful to children when used as intended.
On the Other: Children should not eat the Refills
There is a warning on Swiffer refills to keep out of reach of children to avoid accidental ingestion. The refills can also harm children if they rub them in their eyes or on their skin for a prolonged time. If children are playing with the refills, wash the area the refills touched with water. If the eyes or skin remains irritated, or if your child ate a refill, call your doctor.
Bottom Line
If you use the Swiffer refills on your floor, they will not harm your child. However, if your child eats or plays with the refills, he can harm himself. You should never leave a box of Swiffer refills in reach of an unsupervised young child.
