  • As information and transportation technologies have increased, so has the process of mixing cultural traditions. Some cultures and societies openly invite assimilation and adaptation of their cultural practices. Others strive to preserve the cultural traditions as unique and their own, resisting any cultural blending or transformation. Every aspect of life is effected by the cross-cultural blending.

    Language Learning

Many students enroll and study second languages. When a student decides to learn the language of another culture, she leaves the comfort of known definitions and explanations of reality and begins to see the world differently.

    Religion

When a person attends a religious service of a tradition outside her own, she has a cross-cultural experience. A Christian who visits a Jewish synagogue or an Islamic mosque is crossing cultural lines and experiencing worship in an unfamiliar setting.

    Music

The Japanese tourist in Mexico City that attends the Ballet Folklorico to expand their understanding and appreciation of Mexican dance and music is crossing cultural barriers to do so. Many music styles are eclectic and cross cultural. Musical artists such as Shakira mix elements of Arabic, African, and Latin American rhythms, dance and lyrics.

    Food

Choosing to go to a restaurant of a different culture opens your eyes to new and exciting tastes and choices. Barak and Michelle Obama recently served curry to White House guests to demonstrate leadership in cross-cultural dining. The breakfast burrito at McDonald's blends American and Mexican dining traditions.

    Clothing

Many new immigrants to the United States struggle with the decision to maintain traditional dress or to adapt to American fashion norms. Women in many Islamic societies wear head coverings to demonstrate modesty and religious devotion. Some elect to maintain the tradition while others have the cross-cultural experience of "letting their hair down" in public.
