Almost anyone can start a business in California. In most cases, all that is required is filing the required forms. Permits are often required on the state, county and local levels.
Types of California Businesses
In California, a business can be registered as a sole proprietor, general partnership, limited partnership, limited liability partnership or limited liability company.
Fictitious Business Name
If you are registering for a sole proprietorship and the name of the company will not include your name, a Fictitious Business Name has to be filed in the county where the business will operate.
Partnership Form Filings
Businesses other than sole proprietorships require other forms to be filed at the state, county or local level. These forms include, but are not limited to Statement of Partnership Authority, Certificate of Limited Partnership, Registered Limited Liability Partnership Registration and Limited Liability Company Application for Registration.
Reseller License
All businesses that will be selling a physical product are required to get a seller's permit. For this permit a form must be filed with the State Board of Equalization.
County and City Permits
In addition to state permits and registrations, some cities and counties also require permits. Inquiries with county and local governments should be made when starting a business in California.
