Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil are good for healthy people, as well as those at risk for cardiovascular disease and those who have cardiovascular disease. Omega-3 fatty acids are linked to protection from stroke and heart attack, better brain function, less depression, improvement in symptoms of ADHD, and reduced breast, colon and prostate cancer.
On the Other: Harmful Side Effects
While fish oil does not usually result in life-threatening side effects, certain harmful effects are possible. These include thinning of the blood, allergic reactions, low blood pressure and the loss of blood clotting ability.
Bottom Line
Patients with normal cholesterol levels should take 1 gram of fish oil daily. Patients with high cholesterol should take 2 to 4 grams of fish oil daily, under a physician's care.
