The type of degree you earn in college depends on the length of your course of study as well as the subject you study. Those who study for what is typically a period of four years, or eight semesters, earn a bachelor's degree.
Bachelor of Fine Arts
Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degrees are awarded to students who complete a program of undergraduate study in the visual arts, theater, music or dance.
Professional
A BFA degree is considered a professional degree. The course of study for a BFA is more intensely focused on the arts than that of a Bachelor of Arts (BA).
Bachelor of Arts
Students can also earn a BA degree in the visual and performing arts. BA degree programs focus more on the liberal arts than BFA programs. The National Association of School of Art and Design describes BA programs as teaching the arts in the "context of a broad program of general studies."
Coursework
BFA programs require students to take two-thirds of their coursework in their chosen area of study. The remaining third of their courses are liberal arts and general studies classes.
Benefits
The BFA degree best suits students who are committed to and very talented in their field. Those who graduate with a BFA are prepared to become professional artists.
