BitTorrent is a file-sharing protocol that uses a network of people to transfer files. A user cannot download an entire file unless he is willing to allow other users to upload a portion of the file from his computer. The original file, called a torrent, is split into pieces and distributes the pieces to multiple users. When you download a piece of the file, that piece becomes available from your computer for another user to download. BitTorrent was released by Bram Cohen in 2001. BitTorrent is used for the transfer of large program files such as Linux distributions, as well as for the sharing of pirated movies. One website or computer is not responsible for the entire file. The file will not be lost if one user drops out of the network. To download a torrent, you must have a BitTorrent client. Clients include the original BitTorrent client, uTorrent and Vuze.
