  • <h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Safety Concerns

Laser pointers have become widespread among the general public, and with that comes certain safety concerns. At this time there are no restrictions on buying laser pointers in the United States. If it is shined into a person's eye, the pointer can cause sufficient retinal damage. Laser pointers can cause three types of eye damage. Flash blindness lasts a few minutes. Afterimage is spots in a person's vision, and glare causes a person to be unable to focus.

    On the Other: Problems Unlikely

Most laser pointer safety concerns are very minor. Only the most powerful laser pointers can cause permanent retinal damage, and that is only if shined directly into the eye for more than a few seconds or if used with an optical instrument. Unsafe incidents caused by laser pointers could be easily avoided by not shining the pointer at people. If a laser pointer is used only as intended, it is basically safe.

    Bottom Line

If people who use laser pointers do so safely, there is no cause for concern. Do not buy powerful laser pointers for children, and if you see anyone using a laser pointer unsafely, warn him about it. If he continues, report it to the authorities.
