<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Homeopathic Remedy
Zicam is a homeopathic remedy that uses two natural zinc compounds to ease the symptoms of sickness. The first active ingredient is zincum aceticum. In homeopathic medicine, it is prescribed to treat pus-filled skin breakouts on the back, neck and skin. The second active ingredient is zincum gluconicum. This is used to ease the effects of a virus, including the common cold.
On the Other: FDA Warning
The FDA warnings placed on Zicam are not in reference to the cold sore product. They found that zincum gluconicum can damage the nostrils, resulting in a loss of smell and taste. Because the cold sore version is topical and not applied directly to the inside of the nostril, it is safe.
Bottom Line
Zicam is most effective during the first 24 to 48 hours that a cold sore forms. For the best results, Zicam should be taken at the first signs of a cold sore and continued as directed. There is no conclusive evidence that zincum acetium works, though it is often prescribed by homeopathic professionals.
