  • The Canon HF10 is a versatile camcorder that records high-definition (HD) video in the AVCHD codec onto an internal 16GB flash memory drive. This video can easily be transferred to a computer for storing, editing and other uses. One of the features of the HF10 is the ability to record and/or output standard definition (SD) video as well.

    HD vs. SD

High definition is the term for the higher-resolution digital video recorded and displayed by HD-capable equipment. It offers 1920 x 1080 lines of resolution using its highest-definition mode, compared to 720 x 480 for standard definition.

    Processor

The Canon HF10 uses a DIGIC DV II processor, which is a dedicated video chip, to digitize the incoming video signal as it is being recorded. The DIGIC DV II processor also manipulates the video signal to create the overall look and optimize the video, as well as determine and convert the output format of the video in real time.

    Hard Drive

The non-linear, flash-memory storage format used by the HF10 gives the camera numerous advantages over the 8mm cassettes and mini DV tapes used by other types of camcorders. This creates a number of options in capturing, processing and transferring video that are not possible with the other formats.

    SD Options

Though primarily an HD camera, the HF10 can either be set to capture video in SD, watch the output in SD (for use with non-HDTVs) or record in HD and set the output signal as SD.

    Benefits

By choosing standard definition over HD, you can view the recording on non-HD equipment. You can also transfer your video files to computers without using a Class 4 or higher SDHC memory card reader. Also, by saving a video in SD format, your video's file size is much smaller than the same video would be if it was saved in an HD format.
