The StairMaster is a popular exercise machine that allows the user to get a workout by simulating climbing stairs continuously. StairMasters primarily work the muscles of the legs and the heart.
Purpose
The purpose of a StairMaster is to mimic the movement of climbing stairs while allowing the user to adjust the level of difficulty by setting the resistance level. This exercise works the same muscles as those worked when actually climbing stairs.
Benefits
The StairMaster targets the muscles of the quadriceps, calves and hamstrings and tends to demand more from leg muscles than cycling or running on a treadmill.
Effects
Using the StairMaster works the heart in addition to the leg muscles, raising the heart rate, which can provide a good cardiovascular workout.
Soreness
Use of StairMasters can result in delayed onset muscle soreness in the legs, especially for those not accustomed to strenuous leg workouts.
Expert Insight
Climbing real stairs tends to put more strain on the calf muscles than a StairMaster does, and involve an increased risk of falling. StairMasters have handrails to prevent falls.
