On the Other: People Aren't Always What They Seem
The Internet's anonymity allows people to claim to be whomever they choose. People can and do lie about their gender, age, money troubles and other personal facts. Such deception can cause hurt feelings, financial losses or even injury. Some people use what you reveal in online chat rooms to steal your identity or stalk you. Children are especially vulnerable to this.
Bottom Line
Online chat rooms are generally safe, if you follow common sense rules. Never give out personal information in open or private chat with someone you don't actually know. Do not allow children to use online chat rooms unsupervised. Contact the chat room's administrator if another user bothers you.
