Rogaine works better on the central part of the head as opposed to a receding hairline. Even if it does work, it only works for about 30 percent of men. There are also side effects. Some people may get a dry, itchy scalp and experience irritation. Once you start using Rogaine, you have to keep using it. When you stop using it, your hair loss will start again, and you will lose any hair that you grew while taking the drug.

On the Other: You May Benefit

Rogaine is approved by the Food and Drug Administration. It does work on some men, either by growing new hair or by slowing hair loss--or both. While the new hair may be thinner and shorter, there may be enough to blend in with existing hair.

    Bottom Line

Because Rogaine works for less than half of the men who use it on baldness at the center of the head, there is even less chance of it working on a receding hairline. Also, you will have to use Rogaine for life if you want to maintain any benefits. There is no way to know for whom Rogaine will or will not be effective.
