When a man proposes to a woman--or, in some cases, a woman proposes to a man, there's usually a shiny silver or gold bauble involved: the engagement ring. Whether you're looking for a cubic zirconia stud or a platinum band adorned with diamonds, the costs can vary wildly.
The Low End
If you're looking for something in cubic zirconia, an economical alternative to gold or platinum, or titanium, a silver material, then the prices will range from $20 to around $200 at stores such as Walmart.
The Middle Ground
If you're opting for a moderately priced ring, look at yellow gold and white gold, with its silver appearance. Rings in these materials typically retail for between $500 to $2,000 at Zales and other chain jewelers.
The High End
Platinum is consistently the most expensive option when ring shopping. Platinum rings rarely sell for under $3,000--they can undertake more wear and tear and do not need to be cleaned as often as alternative styles.
Where To Go
Kay Jewelers, Jared and Zales are all good chain options. Each sells gold rings, and both Jared and Zales carry platinum styles.
Shop Around
Price comparison is key. If you can find a similar ring at a different shop for less, then go there. Also, it is always worth checking out local jewelers, who are often more willing to offer deals than chain stores.
