<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Treating Infections
Clavamox, a brand name antibiotic consisting of amoxicillin and clavulanate, is prescribed by veterinarians to treat bacterial infections in cats and dogs. Dosages range from 5 to 12 mg per pound of body weight, administered two or three times a day. Dosages should be determined by the doctor based on several factors, including the condition being treated, the weight of the cat, and the ratio of amoxicillin and clavulanate in the medication.
On the Other: Side Effects
Clavamox may cause serious side effects when given to cats. Vomiting, diarrhea, allergic reactions, and other gastrointestinal side effects are possible. The threat of encouraging the growth of antibiotic resistant bacterium means that it is best not to use antibiotics at all, especially if gentler, natural methods of treatment are available.
Bottom Line
Prevention is key when fighting infections. Keep bedding, food and water bowls, litter boxes, and living areas clean and sanitary to prevent bacterial growth and contamination. Talk to your veterinarian about probiotic supplements that will help minimize side effects, if it is necessary to use Clavamox. Follow dosing instructions carefully and call the doctor if any side effects occur while taking this medication.
